Exercise positively influences psychological health and wellness and cognitive function, varying from the social and ecological (social support, social interactions), to psychological (self-confidence, sense of achievement, interruption from everyday life stressors), to neurobiological (changes in key mind neurotransmitters, stress reaction systems, and architectural and functional mind changes), Alderman says.
"In my laboratory, we study the impact of exercise on cognition and feeling, especially amongst people experiencing from psychological health and wellness conditions," Alderman says. "Generally, we have found that exercise improves select aspects of cognition while decreasing signs of anxiety, although the observed improvements in cognition don't always moderate or cause the improvements in depressive signs."
